The strong supply growth that enabled natural gas inventories to build more than average during the April-October injection season forced prices down during 2019 and is expected to limit them to an average $2.52/MMBtu in 2020, according to the Energy Information Administration. Design capacity is calculated as the sum of reported working natural gas capacities of the 380 active storage fields as reported on survey Form EIA-191, Monthly Underground Natural Gas Storage Report, as of November 2018. This metric is a theoretical limit on the total amount of natural gas that can be stored underground and withdrawn for use. Currently, 94,154 analysts contribute to Estimize, resulting in coverage on over 2,800 stocks and 85 economic indicators each quarter. The Estimize consensus has proven more accurate than comparable sell side data sets over 70% of the time and by 15% on average.

EIA uses Form EIA-912, Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report, to collect data on end-of-week working gas in storage at the company and regional level from a sample of all underground natural gas storage operators. The regions used for weekly reporting were formally the East, West and Producing regions. The price of ethane fell by 4%. The price of natural gasoline and propane rose by 5%, and the price of butane and isobutane each 4%. According to Baker Hughes, for the week ending Tuesday, October 8, the natural gas rig count decreased by 1 to 143. The number of oil-directed rigs rose by 2 to 712.
